Driving Policy


Policy Statement:

SPECIAL OILFIELD SERVICES CO.LLC recognizes driving as most hazardious task performed by employees and legislation places a duty on us as an employer to provide safe working environment, this is also extended to driving on company business. It is requirement for staff to follow defensive driving practices. This includes steps to ensure directions of destinations before departing, refraining from operating equipment such as mobile phones while the vehicle is moving, and not operating vehicle when the driver’s ability is impaired. Drivers are expected to follow defensive driving principles and driving regulations of company its clients and that of Oman government.

Code Of Conduct:

SPECIAL OILFIELD SERVICES CO LLC expects all staff whilst driving on company business to comply with traffic legislation and that of client’s policy of driving. The following actions shall be viewed as serious breaches of conduct:

  1. Consuming Alcohol/smoke or under the influence of drugs while driving
  2. Driving while disqualified or not correctly licensed
  3. Reckless or dangerous driving causing death or injury
  4. Failing to stop after an accident
  5. Any actions that warrants suspension of license.
  6. Traveling in the open rear freight compartments of pick-ups.
  7. Tampering safety / monitoring devices fitted in vehicles.
  8. Usage of mobile phones while driving.
  9. Not wearing seat belts while vehicle is in motion.

Responsibility of an employee:

Staff, who drives on company business, will;

  1. Ensure that they hold current driving license issued by Royal Oman Police and permit issued by client / client approved authorities.
  2. Be responsible and accountable for their actions when driving on company business.
  3. Assess driving hazards and anticipate “What if scenarios”
  4. Wear safety belts and be responsible for all occupants wearing seat belts prior to vehicle is set in motion.
  5. Drive within legal and client approved speed limits.
  6. Report all defects as noticed to journey manager.
  7. Comply with Oman government traffic legislation.
  8. Not use mobile phone/s while driving, even hands free usage is not allowed.
  9. Check vehicle prior to journey as per driver daily checklist.
  10. Report all near misses/accidents/incidents on emergency numbers as listed in company.
  11. Take regular and adequate rest beaks (at specified intervals as specified in journey plan) and stop to take rest when tired
  12. Plan journey ahead, taking into consideration pre-journey work duties, the length of the trip and post journey commitments.
  13. Not do night driving un-less it is authorized by a written letter from company and that of client.
  14. Not pick up hitchhikers.


  1. All staff, who are expected to drive on their routine works in the company shall be holding valid ROP and client driving permits.

Responsibility of employer:

SOS will not require its staff to drive under conditions, which are considered unsafe and /or likely to create an unsafe environment, physical distress, fatigue, etc.

We will do this by:

  1. Ensuring that the vehicles, which we use on contracts, comply with our and client’s vehicle requirements.
  2. Ensuring that staff is aware of their responsibility to check vehicles prior to use.
  3. Ensuring that appropriate trainings, which are compliant to company and client’s requirements, are given to staff.
  4. Holding line managers and journey managers responsible to manage work schedules to ensure that safe driving practices are maintained.
  5. Ensuring that minimum age and driving experience as recognized by company and that specified by client are considered while recruiting designated drivers.
  6. Collecting statistics on accidents and near miss incidents to ensure continuous improvement of driving policy.
  7. Regular review of policy and procedure to ensure the development and quality of driving policy.
